National Diabetes Awareness Month
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month with the 14th being World Diabetes Day. I think it’s important to acknowledge the people who have been affected by this disease.
This month is all about DIABETES. Diabetes is a disease that affects 30 million Americans with 1.25 million estimated to be Type I affecting both adults and children. There’s so much at play with diabetes. Read on.
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by elevated fasting blood sugars. This puts people inherently at risk for other chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, retinopathy, and neuropathy. The cause of this is a faulty pancreas. It doesn’t secrete enough insulin or the cells of the body become resistant to insulin. This means sugar cannot enter the cells.
If you DON’T have Type I Diabetes, there is more of a progression that causes the demise of the glucose/blood sugar connection. Clinically, it starts with somewhat elevated fasting blood sugars then becomes Prediabetes. This is indicative with fasting blood sugars above 105 or so depending on lab ranges. A1C is also a factor in that diagnosis.
The fact is, we can avoid this progression if we eat responsibly. That means we need to eat REAL foods and make sure we are eating a balanced diet including all the macronutrients – the protein, carbohydrates and fats. The problem with our Standard American Diet is our foods are SO heavy in refined carbohydrates and inflammatory fats and proteins. When we eat a processed diet, we are more likely to have blood sugar imbalances.
Often times, this blood sugar management is made more difficult when we have nutrient deficiencies. Here’s the short list of nutrients that are commonly deficient with diabetes:
B3, B12, Vitamin D, C, E, Chromium, Biotin, Magnesium and Zinc…the list, however, goes on.
And, by managing blood sugars, we are also making a difference in how our bodies manage stress. Everything is connected and one imbalance causes another. So, think about this as you go through your days and choosing foods. Think about whether it serves your body or not. Will it impact your blood sugar? Will it nourish your body? Getting back to basics with nutrition will go a long way with improving health and managing the dysregulation of blood sugar which is at the core of managing Diabetes.
